Originally created by the Western & Atlantic Railroad and chartered by the state of Georgia in 1836 to connect the Chattahoochee and Tennessee Rivers to other railroads in Athens, Madison and Columbus, Vinings played a major part in the Civil War, with General William Sherman and his Union Troops using it to map out their target for Atlanta.

After the war ended, Vinings became a vacation spot for Atlanta residents looking for a quiet spot to spend the day. Social clubs formed around the Chattahoochee River and its “spa waters”, and moonshine flowed freely.

The residents and city officials of Vinings have, since the turn of the 19th century, struggled to maintain the city’s integrity and uniqueness and eliminate much of the urban sprawl that had taken over neighboring cities.

Much of the credit for maintaining the integrity of Vinings went to Felix Cochran, an Atlanta real estate developer and a resident of Vinings. He envisioned a town center that would incorporate the small town feel that he felt belonged to Vinings. The result is Vinings Jubilee, otherwise known by residents as downtown Vinings.

Vinings Jubilee, which features beautiful, Victorian-inspired architectural elements, street lanterns and a large clock tower, is home to a great array of upscale shopping and restaurants. Downtown Vinings also includes a pharmacy, a library and churches.

Not many changes have taken place in Vinings over the last 30 years, with the exception of wider streets and sidewalks to encourage pedestrian traffic.

It is located in close proximity to Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport, and is just minutes from Downtown, Midtown, Perimeter Center, Buckhead and the Medical Centers. Travel in and around Atlanta is easy, with local expressways Interstates 75 and 285 and Georgia 400, just minutes away.

Other local sites located in and around Vinings Village include The High Museum, The Fox Theatre, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Atlanta History Center, Cobb Performing Arts Center, and a great selection of dining and shopping destinations.

Vinings is now a popular destination for families and professionals alike, and is a popular tourist destination due to its rich history and beautiful surroundings.
