Originally created by the Western & Atlantic Railroad and chartered by the state of Georgia in 1836 to connect the Chattahoochee and Tennessee Rivers to other railroads in Athens, Madison and Columbus, Vinings played a major part in the Civil War, with General William Sherman and his Union Troops using it to map out their target for Atlanta.

The residents and city officials of Vinings have, since the turn of the 19th century, struggled to maintain the city’s integrity and uniqueness and eliminate much of the urban sprawl that had taken over neighboring cities.
Much of the credit for maintaining the integrity of Vinings went to Felix Cochran, an Atlanta real estate developer and a resident of Vinings.
