Fondly known as Atlanta’s first country club neighborhood, Brookhaven is a quiet, residential neighborhood of beautiful, and often stately, Tudor, Colonial, Georgian and English cottages. These exquisite homes are surrounded by intricate landscapes and tree-lined, winding streets.

Brookhaven is an unincorporated community which is located along the western edge of DeKalb County. It is, without a doubt, one of the most affluent communities in metropolitan Atlanta, with many of the more affordable homes in the area being replaced over the years with large estates that can often exceed four million dollars. Other types of homes in this area include craftsman, bungalow, townhomes and modern condominiums.

Equally affluent shopping centers are located nearby, including Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza. In fact, these two shopping centers are often referred to as one of the most affluent shopping centers in the United States.

Although Brookhaven is primarily residential, the two commercial districts in the area are home to several retail centers and restaurants. A new, downtown Brookhaven is also quickly developing.

Brookhaven Schools

Some of Atlanta’s best schools are located in Brookhaven, including Sarah Smith Elementary, Sutton Middle School and North Atlanta High School. Private elementary and secondary schools are also abundant in Brookhaven, including Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School, St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal School and the Marist School.

Brookhaven History

Brookhaven was first settled by a European settler named John Evans, who started a plantation there around 1810. The land was bought in the 1830s by the Goodwin family. Their original family graveyard and their original log cabin still remain on the grounds. The log cabin is periodically open to visitors throughout the year.

Around 1900, residents of Atlanta began using Brookhaven as a summer retreat, and therefore started building summer cottages there. In 1910, 150 acres of land was purchased for developing a planned community and community golf course.

Capital City Club

The community, now known as Brookhaven, was largely completed by the end of World War II, as was the Capital City Country Club. Further expansions to the country club and clubhouse, which included a French provincial style remodel, were completed in 1928.

The Capital City Country Club is part of The Capital City Club, which also includes the City Club in downtown Atlanta and the Crabapple Golf Club in Cherokee and Fulton Counties.

Some of Brookhaven’s areas of interest include Oglethorpe University and the Brookhaven MARTA Station.
